L’Oreal Infallible Pro Matte Gloss Review

Matte lipgloss? The thought of it just tickles my brain. How can something glossy have a matte finish? Oh, the paradox!

Well, L’Oreal just beat the odds and recently released a lipgloss range as part of the Infallible range, the L’Oreal Infallible Pro Matte Gloss. These basically have the texture and consistency of a lipgloss, but with a matte finish.

Still can’t wrap your head around it? Check out my L’Oreal Infallible Pro Matte Gloss review and swatches below!

Shades & Color Payoff

These are incredibly opaque. The swatches below are swatched with just one swipe. However, they don’t set immediately, making it easy for me to fix any mistakes when applying this on the lips. It completely sets in about a minute or two.

They look rather glossy when heavily swatched on the arm, but on the lips, they dry out to a semi-matte, velvet finish.

There are a total of ten shades in the range, and the four I purchased are the most natural-looking and wearable ones (no surprise there!). The shades I got are:

300 Blushing Ambition is a cool-toned bright pink. Honestly not a favorite of mine because it’s way too cool toned. I love mixing this with other shades though.

314 Nude Allude is a reddish brown shade and is so flattering on a lot of skintones.

316 Statement Nude is a color that’s a few shades darker, and slightly redder, than most people’s natural lip colors, making the name so appropriate. It just gives the lips a bit more depth and “statement” without being too colorful or bright.

318 Bare Attraction is the palest color in the whole line and is a peachy nude shade.

As you can see, these don’t look completely matte. They honestly just look skin-textured. They dry up to a semi-matte, sort of velvet finish. Very smooth-to-the-touch, unlike the case with matte lipsticks.

Texture

When I purse my lips together, my lips feel so velvety smooth and plump, unlike when I’m wearing a matte lipstick or liquid lipstick. So whenever I have this on, it feels like I have a lipgloss on but with a slightly drier texture. They feel very, VERY comfortable on the lips!

I have never been a fan of liquid lipsticks (yes, including Kat Von D’s Lolita!) because I have really dry and easily-chapped lips. Every time I wear something matte, my lips will normally flake off. Not a good feeling, and it looks gross.

The great thing about this gloss is that I can have the best of both worlds – a matte-looking lipstick with a plush, lipgloss feel.

Packaging

These come in a clear tube, making it easy for us to imagine what the colors look like.

It comes with a sponge, diamond-shaped doe-foot applicator which makes it easy to get to the corners of the mouth.

The doe-foot applicator also has a tiny mini-diamond-shaped hole (or bowl I should say?) that stores excess product as we swipe the product on the lips. The fact that it stores excess product also means that during application, we don’t have to keep dipping the applicator in the tube to get more product. We can just use whatever is left in the hole. So clever!

Longevity

Now, this is where things turned south for me.

These are one of the least longwearing lip products I’ve ever worn. Without food and drinks, they almost completely faded out at about the second or third hour mark, and not just that. These transfer on to everything and anything it touches. Hair, fingers, clothes, utensils, you name it.

However, it’s reassuring that they don’t bleed out of the lipline even without lipliner.

I still love them though, but only as a lipgloss or “top coat” for my lip liner or lipstick. Well, maybe that’s why they’re called “lipgloss” and not “lipstick”. Lipglosses in general don’t last as long as lipsticks do.

Price

I’m not sure if these will be released in Australia soon, but these were released late last year in the US.

They retail for an average of US$9.99, depending on where you buy them. Ulta sells them for US$9.99, Drugstore.com sells them for US$13 (but are currently on sale for US$9.99), and I found them on eBay for US$7.99!

Final Verdict

All in all, these matte lipsticks with a lipgloss feel are amazing. Yes, longevity is poor, but when applied on top of a lipliner or lipgloss, they look just as gorgeous and they’re so easy to reapply. They’re lipglosses after all.

So if you’re expecting these to be like liquid lipsticks, well, you won’t like these because they’re not meant to be liquid lipsticks. However, I’ve been loving these because to me they’re basically lipglosses with a satin-matte finish!
