Rimmel The Only 1 Matte Lipstick Review & Swatches

Rimmel The Only 1 Matte Lipstick

Rimmel has jumped on the matte lipstick bandwagon and recently released The Only 1 Matte lipstick range, featuring nine matte lip colors formulated with a non-drying formula that is actually comfortable to wear.

Rimmel claims the lipstick to be so comfortable and moisturising “it glides on like a dream, without dragging or skipping” with a luscious lightweight sensation.

Do these live up to their claims?

Check out my Rimmel The Only 1 Matte lipstick review and swatches below!

Shades & Color Payoff

The lipstick range has a variety of nine shades, including a stand-out purple.

I love that they include very wearable colors, as well as crazy, bright colors. The payoff is good, I could get a completely opaque color in 1-2 layers.

Rimmel The Only 1 Matte Lipstick Swatches

110 Leader of the Pink, a bright “Barbie”-esque pink, is honestly my least favorite color, not that it’s a bad color, it just doesn’t suit me. I also find that this particular color separates on the lips and clings on to dry patches.

120 Call the Shots, a reddish hot pink, is incredibly pigmented and stains the lips, which is good! Even after the lip color has faded away, the reddish, pink shade still brightens up the complexion.

200 Salute is a pinky nude that I really, really like! No surprise there, LOL.

500 Take the Stage is a neutral undertoned bright, true red which would look flattering against all skintones.

610 High Flyer is, of course, my absolute favorite! It’s a mid-toned pink that is the perfect MLBB (my lips but better) shade for a lot of skintones.

700 Trendsetter is a brownish nude that just adds a little bit of depth to the lips, and I love that it’s not the type of nude that washes out my complexion.

750 Look Who’s Talking is a deep, brownish red and somehow applies a bit streaky, but after pursing the lips a couple of times it smooths out beautifully.

800 Run The Show is a bright purple and I really didn’t expect a color like this from Rimmel, which I applaud them for. I recently wore this to a NYX product launch event and got a lot of compliments! I really didn’t expect to like this color so much. Sadly it’s definitely not something I would wear on a daily basis, but only to certain events.

810 The Matte Factor is a vampy, mauve-ish berry red that’s perfect for fall!

Formula

The formula slightly vary between the shades, some apply smoother than others. I experienced a bit of tugging with 110, but everything else was really smooth. They’re all very creamy and plush for matte lipsticks. I won’t say that these are completely matte though, and Rimmel did claim that these are “velvet matte” lipsticks, so these have more of a velvet/satin finish.

These have a “lip hugging” sort of feel on the lips, so they’re very comfortable to wear.

Longevity

I wore the purple shade for a recent blogger event and my it lasted the whole entire night, even after eating a whole lot. The purple shade lasted for at least 7 hours! When I removed them from my lips, only the inner parts of my lips were faded. I like that they fade gradually and not in patches, nor do they flake off.

I notice that the brighter colors, like the reds and berry reds, last for more than 6 hours, and even leaving a stain that is difficult to remove.

The lighter shades fade a bit faster though, lasting for about 4 hours before they completely disappeared. I usually have to reapply after the 5th hour mark.

Packaging

These come in the signature Rimmel The Only 1 lipstick packaging, but with matted red caps instead of black.

I like how there’s a stripe of the color of the lipstick near the bottom, this makes it easier for us to determine which color it is.

The slanted bullet makes application so much easier.

Price

These retail for AU$9.80 – $15.95 on ASOS, £6.99 on Feel Unique and AU$15.95 on Priceline.

Final Verdict

I actually really like these lipsticks even though they’re not completely matte, and I especially love the nudes. Even the purple was (surprisingly) pretty wearable too! What’s your favorite shade from the range?
