Burt’s Bees Lip Crayons Review

My friends and I were at a Manning’s in IFC Mall, Hong Kong – I was going crazy exploring the adorable skincare aisles when my friend brought these to my attention. She asked for my opinion on which color she should get – and after swatching the colors for her I ended up falling in love with these myself!

She ended up getting Napa Vineyard, but I ended up getting THREE shades. No surprise there.

So here’s my Burt’s Bees Lip Crayons review and swatches.

Update: I now have all six shades (thank you Burt’s Bees Australia!) so I have an updated arm swatch below 😉

Color that truly cares for your lips!” seem to be the tagline for this range of creamy, full coverage, matte lip colors. They have “lightweight moisture for a comfortable, everyday wear formula infused with Shea Butter, Kendi Oil and Jojoba Oil.

Shades

When I first posted this review, I had three out of six shades. By now I have all six shades!

Here are the arm swatches of all six shades:

Burts Bees Lip Crayons Swatches (1)

Napa Vineyard, a semi-matte bright, warm red. This color tends to bleed outside the lipline if worn too thick, so be sure to wear a lipliner before using this color in full opacity. One layer is fine though, I love wearing just one layer of this! The following swatch is two layers applied.

Hawaiian Smolder, a cool mid-tone pink that can seem to have neutral undertones under certain lighting and thickness. This applies sheerer than the other two shades, but is definitely buildable. A thin layer of this looks more neutral, and the more layer you add, the cooler-toned it will look.

Redwood Forest is a warm-toned brownish red-pink, that leans more towards maroon with more layers.
Sedona Sands, a warm, earthy pinky nude that’s just oh-so-gorgeous. I could rarely find nudes that I like, this one just subtly hides my natural lip color without washing out my whole complexion. My absolute go-to nude!Update: I now have all six shades, here are the three additional shades I got:

Niagara Overlook, my favorite out of the bunch, is a warm-toned peachy pink. It just brightens up the whole complexion and I love the balance between the peachy-orange tones and the pink tones.

Carolina Coast, a cool-toned baby pink, is the shade I use the least. The formula is just as great as the rest, but it’s just too cool-toned for me. It will look gorgeous on fairer and cooler-toned skin tones though!

Formula

The textures between these three somehow vary. The sheer pink shade, Hawaiian Smolder, has a slippery, glossy texture while the other two has drier textures, as with most matte lip products.

However, these finishes aren’t completely matte. Still gorgeous and long lasting though!

Longevity

Longevity-wise, the darker colors lasted for at least five hours even with food and drinks. And rain. I remember we ate noodles at Causeway Bay while wearing these lip crayons (I was wearing Redwood Forest, my friend was wearing her Napa Vineyard), our lips were still very pigmented and stained after our meal! I only had to reapply one thin layer after the meal.

Packaging

One thing I love about these is the packaging – I love how the cap is transparent so we can see the color of the lip crayons. It’s also got honeycomb patterns on the cap, which I think is super adorable!

It’s also a twist-up crayon, so no need to fuss about sharpening these!

Final Verdict

These are, hands down, my favorite drugstore lip products. They’re perfect for me because my lips are sensitive and get chapped easily and these are so so moisturizing and comfortable on the lips, yet intensely pigmented at the same time. I have no problem wearing these on days when my lips are so chapped and flakey.

I’m a bit befuddled that some people found these to be dry and tugging when applied because I personally found these to apply very, very smoothly on my dry lips. I’m relieved to see that the MakeupAlley rating is 4.2/5 though, because I do find these to be super pigmented, long lasting and moisturizing.

I actually found these to be more moisturizing than the Revlon ColorBurst Balms which I’ve reviewed (and give full marks) here.

So, full marks for these as well!
