Hot or Not: Gigi Hadid x Maybelline Collection Review

The Gigi Hadid x Maybelline collection has got to be one of the most anticipated launches this year, and I was so excited I to try them out! The nude, blush pink packaging is beautiful and I’m drawn to anything pink, so this collection was calling out my name. But is everything as good as it seems?

Although these are from Maybelline, they’re all more expensive than regular Maybelline products, obviously because it has Gigi’s name attached to it. So, not everything from the collection is worth the price.

Read on to see swatches and for my reviews of the products!

The collection is divided into two categories: East Coast Glam and West Coast Glow. The Jetsetter Palette is in a league of its own as it is an all-in-one palette.

The East Coast Glam range’s tagline is “Casual Glam” and is all about creating that all-natural-yet-glamorous look with nude lips and bold eyes. The West Coast Glow range comes with bright red lipsticks and golden highlights to create a “Soft Glow”.

MAYBELLINE GIGI HADID JETSETTER PALETTE

AVAILABLE FROM: Ulta ($29.99), Priceline (A$44.95)

The Gigi Hadid Jetsetter palette is the star of the collection and claims to have all the essentials for on-the-go makeup looks. It contains:

  • 2 concealers
  • 2 lip balms
  • 4 eyeshadows
  • 1 blush
  • 1 matte bronzer
  • 1 highlighter
  • 1 mini Volum’ Express The Colossal Mascara
  • 1 mirror
  • 1 blush brush
  • 1 double-ended eye brush

I was looking forward to trying this palette the most, but it turned out to be the one that disappointed me the most. Why?

First of all, the packaging, although pretty, is SO BULKY. I would never consider travelling with this as it is almost twice as thick as a Naked palette, which totally defeats its purpose of being a “jetsetter” palette meant to be convenient for traveling.

I also don’t like how the cheek products are placed horizontally, which makes the pan for each product long and thin. It’s really difficult to pick up a color without accidentally dipping the brush into another color as they’re placed so closely together. If they were placed vertically, there would be slightly more width in each pan and it would be easier to pick up individual colors.

Lastly, the quality of the concealers and shadows are well below my expectations. I’m not even gonna talk about the concealers, they’re so bad. As for the eyeshadows, I love the Maybelline City Mini Palettes (reviewed here), and was hoping the colors would be as good, but the two dark mattes (brown and black) are not pigmented at all and were very dry and patchy when blended. Even when swatched heavily, you can see in the swatches above the brown looked rather uneven. The frosty white-champagne color is gorgeous though, so at least there’s one good shade.

The blush is really pretty, and the texture is so buttery soft it applies like a dream. However, the bronzer is a bit too dark and red toned for me, and the baby pink cheek highlighter is too… pink?

So, the only two things I like from this palette is the white eyeshadow and blush, which isn’t good enough to justify its price tag.

Hot or Not? Sadly not. If you want to get a palette from this collection, get the Gigi Hadid West Coast Glow Eyeshadow Palette, reviewed below.

MAYBELLINE GIGI HADID WEST COAST GLOW EYESHADOW PALETTE

AVAILABLE FROM: Ulta ($14.99), Priceline (A$22.95)

This is the one item that I highly recommend from this collection. If you’re only looking to get one item from the collection, this should be it! It’s designed like the Maybelline City Mini Palettes (reviewed here) and the colors are gorgeous. There are two West Coast Glow palettes: Warm and Cool. I purchased the Warm and it has more of a peachy-pink tone, while the Cool comes with cooler lavender hues.

Check out the swatches of the Warm palette below:

The warm pinky shades are so beautiful, and they’re all very pigmented and buttery smooth. I’ve only used this palette once and I’m so in love with it already. I have no complaints about this palette, I love the nude pink packaging and how small it is. This is much more travel friendly than the Jetsetter palette!

Hot or Not? Absolutely HOT.

MAYBELLINE GIGI HADID EAST COAST GLAM LIP LINER

AVAILABLE FROM: Ulta ($7.99), Priceline (A$13.95)

This is another item from the collection that I really, really like. It’s like a cooler-toned andversion of my favorite lip liner, the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk (reviewed here), which is noticeably brighter and pinker.

See the swatches below:

Maybelline Gigi Hadid Lani & Taura Swatches

The color is very versatile and can be used with any lip color. It’s not as waterproof and smudge-proof as the Charlotte Tilbury, but for something from the drugstores, this is considered to be one of the best. I also find this to be better than the Colourpop lip liners, they don’t smudge easily and don’t bleed out. Sometimes the Colourpop ones do.

Hot or Not? HOT! They’re selling out fast, so get them now before they’re sold out!

These are sold individually but are also available in a duo that also comes with the East Coast Glam Matte lipstick in the shade Taura, reviewed below.

MAYBELLINE GIGI HADID EAST COAST GLAM MATTE LIPSTICK IN TAURA

AVAILABLE FROM: Ulta ($8.99), Priceline (A$19.95)

The East Coast Glam range comes with nude pinks and although this lip color is almost exactly the same as the lip liner shade as seen in the swatches above, I’m more drawn into the lip liner. Maybe it’s the formula, undertone or the finish, I can’t put my finger on it. I’m just unsure whether I like this lipstick formula or not and am not completely blown out of the water by the overall look it gives.

These are about $1 more expensive than regular Maybelline lipsticks, so I’m not sure how I feel about this since there are Maybelline lipsticks with better formulas out there.

Hot or Not? Not sure. I’ll have to try this out more often and update this post.

MAYBELLINE GIGI HADID WEST COAST GLOW LIPSTICK IN LANI*

AVAILABLE FROM: Ulta ($8.99), Priceline (A$19.95)

The West Coast range comes with bright red lipstick shades and this is one’s a tad more berry-toned. I really, really like this shade and I can see myself wearing this a lot for special occasions, especially Christmas! It’s super pigmented and bold, and applies very smoothly on the lips.

Hot or Not? I haven’t worn this out yet so I can’t testify on its longevity and wear throughout the day, so I won’t be able to judge this fairly. However, the shade itself is stunning, so maybe… hot? 😉

MAYBELLINE GIGI HADID EAST COAST GLAM FIBER MASCARA*

AVAILABLE FROM: Ulta ($12.99), Priceline (A$22.95)

I’ve never tried a fiber mascara from Maybelline before, so this was intriguing, and I’m glad to report that I actually like it. I won’t say it beats my all-time favorite L’Oreal Lash Paradise mascara, but this is one of the most volumizing and lengthening drugstore mascaras ever. Aside from the gorgeous packaging, the best thing about this is that the fibers don’t crumble or fall out, which sometimes happens with fiber mascaras!

However, be extra careful not too overapply the mascara as it WILL clump like cray-cray. Also, don’t forget to scrape off excess fibers in the wand before applying them on the lashes. Applying too much at once will cause flaking, so it’s better to add them gradually.

Hot or Not? Hot! Although I still feel like I need to play around with it a bit more, I think I might actually repurchase this in the future.

MAYBELLINE GIGI HADID WEST COAST GLOW LASH SENSATIONAL MASCARA*

AVAILABLE FROM: Ulta ($11.99), Priceline (A$22.95)

This is basically the Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara ($8.99 at Ulta, sometimes even cheaper at drugstores!) with Gigi Hadid’s name stamped on the packaging, and we’re paying $3 extra for it. So although I’m a huge fan of this mascara, I’m not going to get this for $3 more just for Gigi’s name.

Hot or Not? Hot, only because the Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara is one of my all-time favorite mascaras (mentioned here), so I have no complaints about the formula and the wand, BUT I’d rather just go with the regular (i.e. cheaper) Lash Sensational Mascara, thank you!

FINAL VERDICT

So based on the things I’ve tried from the collection so far, I don’t think every single thing is worth the price. However, there are three things that really stood out for me, and they are:

  1. West Coast Glow Eyeshadow Palette in Warm
  2. East Coast Glam Lip Liner
  3. East Coast Glam Fiber Mascara

I haven’t tried anything else from the line, but from observing them in stores, I don’t think I will be picking up anything else from the line. I’m curious to try the liners though, so maybe I’ll try those in the near future.

What do you think of the Gigi Hadid x Maybelline collection? What are your favorites?
