Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chrome Review & Swatches

Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chrome

Not long after Maybelline came out with the Color Tattoo Crayons (reviewed here), they released the Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chrome, further expanding their Color Tattoo range. I was so hyped up about this release because their original cream shadows were my holy grail!

Check out my Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chrome review and swatches below and see if they lived up to my expectations!

Shades

These come in ten shades, but I was only able to get my hands on four of them. I like that the names are pretty self explanatory!

Check out the swatches below:

Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chrome Swatches

510 Beige Luster is a common, metallic bronze-ish beige. There’s nothing truly unique about this shade even though it is gorgeous and has got silver and gold glitters in it.

550 Electric Emerald is a dark emerald green.

560 Bold Sapphire dark navy blue.

590 Gunmetal is an ashy black packed with multi colored glitters.

Pigmentation & Formula

The pigmentation of the Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chrome varies between shades, and so does the smoothness. Beige Luster is probably the best out of the four because it applies pretty smoothly with minimal patchiness.

The three darker shades, however, have really really bad patchiness. It took a while for me to get the swatches pictured above as I had to wait for them to dry before adding on another layer to make it look smooth. If I had just applied them as is, they would be so patchy, it’s as if they have “bald spots”.

Here I applied two layers of the shade 590 Gunmetal. I had to apply two layers because the first layer was so hopelessly patchy with lots of bald spots. Sadly the second layer didn’t help.

Out of the three dark shades, Bold Sapphire has the worst pigmentation and patchiness.

Pictured below are swatches done with only one swipe then slightly blended. I, for the life of me, cannot get Bold Sapphire to blend out smoothly like the other shades! WHY, MAYBELLINE, WHY? :'( I’m so sad coz the color is so gorgeous.

See below Beige Luster blended on my eyelid. It’s much easier to blend and ends up looking smooth, and it didn’t crease until I removed it by the end of the day.

It’s a bit of a mess because I blended it too far out, but can be easily fixed before it completely sets and dries out.

Longevity

As for longevity, these are truly impressive. They’re so budge proof that I couldn’t even remove them with my Dermalogica Precleanse Cleansing Oil. I had to use an oil-based eye makeup remover like the Clinique Take The Day Off Eye Makeup Remover and press it on the skin for about 5-10 seconds before wiping it off.

I’ve never worn the three darker shades out and about because they were too much work (they’re not the easiest to blend), but I’ve worn Beige Luster so many times and it always lasts the whole day (about 8-10 hours) until I remove them.

Packaging & Applicator

I honestly like how these are packaged. The barrels aren’t too overwhelmingly big. They’re decently sized and I like that they’re see through, so we can see the true colors of the product.

The doe foot applicator is really nice, I like that they’re not too flimsy, nor are they too firm.

Price

These retail for about $7.99 to $9.99, depending on where you purchase them. These are available from drugstores, Amazon (US$7.94) and Ulta (US$7.99).

Final Verdict

These Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chrome eyeshadows are very long wearing and they have really good potential, I just wish they’re not as patchy and difficult to blend! Thankfully the beige shade is wonderful and I can see myself wearing that shade a lot. I would not recommend the three darker colors though, so I can’t give my badge of approval for this review.

However, I am open to trying more shades from the line as I’ve heard the lighter colors are much better than the darker ones!
